Language Lab Guidelines and Expectations
The goal of the Language Lab is to help you become an independent learner and support your learning needs as a foreign language student. Listed below are guidelines that will enhance your learning experience while you are studying in the lab. By applying these guidelines, you will accomplish academic and personal skills that will serve you for a lifetime!
Please take a moment to review our tutoring guidelines.
Be prepared for tutoring. This means:
- Attending class regularly
- Reading the assigned materials
- Attempting assigned coursework
- Preparing questions for the tutors on trouble spots
- Providing an assignment sheet or being able to discuss the assignment
Understand that the tutor will provide appropriate feedback concerning my work quality – both strengths and weaknesses.
Understand that not all errors may be addressed during a tutoring session.
Understand that my tutor cannot provide any assistance which could be construed as academic dishonesty – I am responsible for doing the work myself. This includes but is not limited to: graded homework assignments, take home tests, and compositions.
Be involved in the tutoring process (asking questions, taking notes, highlighting key points, using resources when needed, etc.)
Understand that any changes to my assignments are ultimately my decision and responsibility; therefore, the grade that I earn on an assignment is up to me. In addition, going to the lab does not guarantee my professor will assign me a higher grade.
Understand that this is a drop-in tutoring service and one-on-one assistance from the tutoring staff is not guaranteed.
Consider tutoring a substitute for going to class - I will get the most out of tutoring by attending all classes and being prepared to ask tutors specific questions.
Expect a tutor to edit my assignment or homework for me.
Expect the tutor to direct the discussion.
Disrespect my tutor or other students by using a cell phone, speaking loudly, or acting inappropriately in the lab.
Plagiarize. This includes but is not limited to presenting someone else's words or ideas as my own, cheating, furnishing false information, alteration or misuse of documents, and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive (see Student Code of Conduct policy 6Hx28:10-16).
